The first Manchester City vs Liverpool Premier League clash of 2023/24 is almost here, a game which is sure to be one of the spectacles of the season. An array of world class talent will be on display at the Etihad Stadium Saturday lunch time which got us thinking, what is the Manchester City vs Liverpool combined XI in terms of transfer value?

Here at SportsLens, we’ve identified the strongest possible combined XI in terms of transfer value ahead of the blockbuster, using a 4-3-3 formation:

Goalkeeper

Ederson – Manchester City – £34.7m

Brazilian shot-stopper Ederson gets the nod over countryman Alisson in between the sticks. In terms of ability, there’s vert little to separate them but the Manchester City star is valued slightly higher than the Reds goalkeeper.

Right Back

Trent Alexander-Arnold – Liverpool – £56.4m

Although he has been used in midfield in recent times, Liverpool‘s Trent Alexander-Arnold gets the nod at right-back after playing there last time out against Brentford. The England man is worth considerably more than fellow Three Lions teammates Kyle Walker and Rico Lewis.

Centre Back

Ruben Dias – Manchester City – £69.5m

Ruben Dias has been a rock at the heart of the Manchester City defence for the last few seasons and his transfer value – and age – truly reflects that. The Portuguese centre back is a vital part of boss Pep Guardiola‘s side and is one of the finest defenders in the Premier League.

Centre Back

Josko Gvardiol – Manchester City – £69.5m

One of the latest additions to Manchester City’s squad, Josko Gvardiol was one of the most sought after players across the globe after his impressive World Cup for Croatia in 2022. City snared his signature and he has proven so far what all the hype is about.

Left Back

Andy Robertson – Liverpool – £34.7m

Although he’ll miss Saturday’s Manchester City vs Liverpool battle, Andy Robertson still comes in as the most valuable left back. The Scottish star has been a huge part of the Reds recent success since his £8m move from Hull City. Robertson has consistently been one of the best full-backs in the Premier League and he has proven invaluable at both ends of the pitch.

Defensive Midfield

Rodri – Manchester City – £86.8m

Rodri is head and shoulders above anyone in terms of value for the defensive midfield role. The Spaniard is arguably one of the finest players not just in the Premier League, but across Europe and beyond. He has been another standout performer for Manchester City and has been vital to their recent success on the pitch.

Kevin De Bruyne – Manchester City – £60.8m

Kevin De Bruyne would quite literally walk into any starting XI in world football and he has demonstrated his vast array of talents time and time again. The Belgian maestro has all the attributes you’d want from a modern day midfielder and he has often been the catalyst behind Manchester City’s successes domestically and across Europe.

Dominik Szoboszlai – Liverpool – £60.8m

Hungarian summer signing Dominik Szoboszlai has wasted no time in becoming a fans favourite at Liverpool and there is certainly more to come from the talented midfielder. He is already proving he can – and most likely will be – a huge success at Anfield for years to come. A very exciting talent Jurgen Klopp has at his disposal.

Attacking Right Winger

Mo Salah – Liverpool – £56.4m

Although Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva has played attacking right winger this season, he is employed more as a central attacking midfielder so we have given the position to Liverpool’s Mo Salah. Silva is valued slightly higher than the Egyptian king but this position is his own and he has been a revelation for the Reds since joining in 2017. Jurgen Klopp’s goal machine is arguably the best in the world in this position.

Attacking Left Winger

Phil Foden – Manchester City – £95.5m

Still only 23, Phil Foden has won almost every trophy there is to win at club level and he is by far one of the most naturally gifted players the Premier League has ever produced. And his transfer value truly reflects that. He has been a big part of City’s success and is very likely to add to his already impressive haul of titles in years to come.

Striker

Erling Haaland – Manchester City – £156.4m

There was only ever going to be one player who got the role up top and that is Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. His transfer value is astronomical and his performances on the pitch more than justify this. The Norwegian is arguably the best player in world football and many believe he should have been awarded the 2023 Ballon d’Or.
