Lyon have approached Tottenham with an enquiry about taking Djed Spence on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.

Spence has struggled since his move to Spurs, making just four Premier League appearances, with all four coming from the bench.

The England U21 international arrived in north London six months ago, following an impressive campaign with Nottingham Forest helping secure the Reds promotion to the English top-flight.

Brentford, Southampton and Leicester have all been named as potential suitors for Spence within the English game, but a move to Ligue 1 might well be an option, as Lyon are said to have made an approach for the full-back.

Lyon are believed to be looking for a new right-back as they prepare to lose French starlet Malo Gusto to Chelsea in a deal that could be worth around £30m.

19-year-old Gusto has started 15 times for Lyon in Ligue 1 this term, and will look to provide Reece James some stern competition for the right-back spot in Graham Potter’s starting eleven.

Spence will see this as an opportunity for regular first-team football, possibly making up for lost time in an unsuccessful six month spell with Spurs.

Seven-time French top-flight champions Lyon currently find themselves in mid-table, sitting in ninth place in the Ligue 1 table.

The club are priced at 66/1 to finish in the top three come the end of the season, according to Ligue 1 betting sites, as they are set to miss out on European football for a second successive season.

The potential departure of Spence comes amidst his club’s pursuit of Sporting Lisbon and Spain right-back Pedro Porro.

Tottenham are said to be closer than ever to finalising a deal for the Sporting defender, in a deal worth up to £40m.
