The French champions have appointed the Spaniard on a two-year deal following the sacking of of Christophe Galtier, whose exit was announced by the club on Wednesday morning. Galtier was finally dismissed after weeks of speculation, despite winning the Ligue 1 title in his one season in charge.

Enrique was wanted by both Chelsea and Tottenham at stages in their recent search for manager replacements, but neither side could come to an agreement with the former Spain and Barcelona coach.

The 53-year-old has been out of work since leaving Spain in December following their shock last-16 elimination from the World Cup at the hands of Morocco in Qatar.

Now, Luis Enrique returns to his first club job since leaving Barcelona in 2017. He won nine trophies in three seasons between 2014 and 2017 including the Champions League, La Liga and Copa del Rey treble in his first campaign in charge.

Galtier was sacked with a year remaining on the contract he signed last summer. He did win the league title but could not do enough to win more than one trophy. PSG were dumped out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich in the last-16, while also suffering defeat to rivals Marseille in the same round of the French Cup.

The club released a statement on Wednesday morning: “The entire Paris Saint-Germain team would like to thank Christophe Galtier, as well as his assistants Thierry Oleksiak and João Sacramento, for their professionalism and commitment throughout the season, and wish them all the best for the rest of their careers.”
