Liverpool’s chances of reaching the Top Four have taken a big hit, after their 1-0 loss to Bournemouth earlier today. With UK Betting sites pricing them at 7/4 to qualify for Champions League football.
Jurgen Klopp’s side travelled to Bournemouth full of confidence after their emphatic 7-0 victory over Manchester United last weekend. However, it was the home side that started the match with that aforementioned confidence.
The Cherries opened the scoring mid-way through the first-half, as Philip Billing smashed the ball into the back of the net following some tricky wing-play from Dango Ouatarra. Dominic Solanke came close to doubling the lead but his first touch let him down.
Liverpool had opportunities to equalise throughout the half, as Virgil Van Dijk saw two headers narrowly miss the target. Mohamed Salah was unusually quiet, but he sparked into life and his shot almost levelled things at the Vitality Stadium.
The Reds started the second-half with more conviction and substitute Diogo Jota won his side a penalty after his header was blocked with an arm. Leaving Salah to step-up to the spot and put his penalty wide of the post.
Bournemouth were compact and determined for the remainder of the half and kept Liverpool’s chances at a minimum. The Reds piled on the pressure but could not find the finishing touch and the home side took all three points.
Can Liverpool Reach The Top Four?
Champions League qualification is vital for Klopp’s side as they look to save their disappointing season. However, today’s defeat against Bournemouth has dampened their chances of doing so, as Newcastle and Spurs can extend their lead in their fixtures this weekend.
Next up for the Reds is an away trip to La Liga champions, Real Madrid. Liverpool suffered a colossal 5-2 defeat to the Spanish side in their opening leg and will be hoping to complete yet another historic comeback in European competition.
