Liverpool welcome Southampton in their 200th home FA Cup match. After beating Chelsea 1-0 in extra-time, Jurgen Klopp’s line-up is expected to look a little different.
What records could Liverpool break?
Liverpool could break the record for youngest-ever FA Cup starting XI. This record is currently held by Liverpool and Klopp. In 2017, the German manager broke the record in an goalless FA Cup third-round tie against Plymouth Argyle. The average was confirmed at 21 years and 296 days.
Klopp is no stranger to entrusting youngsters in his first-team squad. That was apparent in their recent Carabao Cup triumph over Chelsea.
If Klopp decides to play Trey Nyoni, he will become the youngest-ever Liverpool player to have played in the FA Cup at just 16 years and 243 days.
Liverpool squad injury update
The Liverpool team is full of injuries. It didn’t help that extra-time was enforced in the Carabao Cup final, so the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahim Konate and Luis Diaz had to play for 120 minutes. Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo both picked up injuries in the final too.
Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai could all return for Liverpool, but it’s unlikely they’ll start as Liverpool’s Saturday trip to the Forest Ground will be seen as more important.
Other key players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Allison and Diogo Jota are expected to return after the March international break.
The fixtures don’t stop for Liverpool as the Europa League returns for them. They travel to the Czech Republic to face Sparta Praha. The Reds will then host Manchester City at Anfield in the biggest game of the season. Pretty hectic week coming up for Klopp.
