Football fans across the world were stunned to hear Lionel Messi’s latest comments that he thinks Spurs defender Cristian Romero is the best defender in the world.
These comments came about last night as Argentina beat Ecuador 1-0 thanks to a wonderful Messi free-kick. Romero also produced some heroic last-ditch defending which prompted Messi’s comments about him.
“For me, he is the best defender in the world right now,” Messi told reporters after the game. “Amazing performance tonight, man of the match.”
Fans took to social media to voice their disbelief. An Arsenal fan on X wrote: “He’s not even in the top 5 in London never mind the world”. Another fan wrote: “Not even Tottenham’s best”.
Messi isn’t the only one to have made that statement this evening as Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernadez agreed on social media with the comment: “Best central in the world”.

Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni was also full of praise for Romero’s performance after the game, stating: “I have no words for the match Cuti Romero had.”
“During the home games, people motivate him and he thinks he’s a He-Man, he can run 70 metres. He is an impressive centre-back, he played an incredible game”
Romero was apart of the Spurs squad that failed to secure European football and conceded 63 goals in the Premier League last season.
