The race for the 2023 Ballon D’Or is expected to come down to two players according to the latest odds – Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.

The 67th annual Ballon D’Or ceremony is scheduled for Monday 16th October in the Theatre du Charelet in Paris, France, organised by France Football magazine.

After winning the World Cup with Argentina in December, Messi established himself as a firm frontrunner for the award – which would be an incredible eighth honour.

However, with Manchester City closing in on a potential treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup – Erling Haaland is right in the mix after breaking the single season scoring record.

According to football betting sites, Messi is an odds-on price of 4/7 to win the award.

2023 Ballon D’Or Odds

  • Lionel Messi @ 4/7
  • Erling Haaland @ 5/4
  • Vinicius Jr @ 25/1
  • Karim Benzema @ 25/1
  • Kylian Mbappe @ 33/1
  • Kevin De Bruyne @ 40/1

Two months ago, France Football announced a host of changes to rules around judging, which is now based on performances over a full season instead of a calendar year previously.

In 38 appearances for PSG this season, Messi has tallied 20 goals and 19 assists – an impressive return, but not quite as good as his Norwegian opponent.

In 48 games, Haaland has bagged a mighty 52 goals and added eight assists on top. Winning the Champions League is likely a key factor in the 22-year-old’s hopes of individual glory.

Real Madrid duo Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema are next up in the betting market, but after losing the La Liga title to Barcelona this season they face a hard battle.

Kylian Mbappe’s hopes could’ve been much different if the penalty shootout in Qatar went the other way, but as it stands his PSG teammate is the leading candidate.

Probability of winning Ballon D’Or

  • Lionel Messi: 64%
  • Erling Haaland: 44%
  • Vinicius Jr: 4%
  • Karim Benzema: 4%
  • Kylian Mbappe: 3%
  • Kevin De Bruyne: 2%
