Lay Of The Day Horse Racing Tips: Wednesday 3rd January 2024

The UK and Ireland horse racing cards on Wednesday come only from Kempton (AW) with Huntingdon and Ffos Las both called off due to the weather.

See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day pick. A fancied horse that he’s taking on today with the best horse racing betting sites.

You can also join up with top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win a race.

Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 6:30 Kempton – BIG R

A dire affair that sees eight runners line-up for this Class 5 Handicap over 6f. However, the lack of quality in the race also means that just about anything could win – meaning we’ll have seven horses running for us.

The pick – Big R – certainly has the form to win a race of this nature but there are several negatives that suggest wading into him would be a risky business.

Firstly, he’s yet to win a race from nine tries, with a couple of silvers the best he’s done to date. He returned last month with a 7th (of 12) at Southwell and can be expected to have improved for that as it came off a 131-day break.

He’s also down another 2lbs in the ratings to a career-low mark and regular rider Charles Bishop continues in the saddle. However, the horse was still beaten 5-lengths the last day and weakened quickly when beaten. He’s also raced twice before at Kempton and even though he’s run okay (3rd and 2nd) has been beaten over 2 lengths each time.

But the bigger alarm bell is that connections are reaching for the first-time blinkers. This suggests Big R is not the most straight-forward and despite there being every chance they will help, it’s still a fairly big unknown and slightly worrying with a horse that is 0-from-9 and starting to look a tad exposed.

Add in that we’ll also have two proven CD winners on our side in Hiatus and First Company, then at the prices there seems to be enough evidence to look elsewhere for the winner in what looks a desperate contest.

Let’s hope the weather improves in the coming days!

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1), then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
