Andy Newton continues with his Lay Of The Day horse racing tips on Wednesday 17th January 2024, where he’s got one horse to take on at Kempton.
Lay Of The Day Horse Racing Tips: Wednesday 17th January 2024
The UK horse racing cards on Wednesday from Southwell, Newcastle (AW) and Kempton (AW) with Newbury off due to a frozen track.
See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day tip – a fancied horse that he makes a case on why it might NOT win.
There are several ways to play this lay of the day tip. You can either join top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win (recent results below).
Or you could just rule this horse out and bet on another runner to win with the best horse racing betting sites – like BetMGM, where you can get a ÂŁ40 free bet below – you choose!

Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 7:30pm Kempton – NO NEWS
Sticking on the AW this Wednesday with the cold spell continuing to claim most of the jumping action – hopefully things will start to warm up a tad as we draw closer to the weekend.
Anyway, it’s off to the Kempton Park evening fixture for today’s pick as the John Jenkins runner NO NEWS looks worth opposing.
Yes, on recent form there is a lot to like after two nice wins at the track and this 4 year-old is clearly in the form of his life.
However, this recent double was his only wins from 19 runs to that point and as a result is creeping back up the handicap. He’s now up another 2lbs for his last win and is 6lbs higher than his first.
But the bigger worry is that he’s stepping up in trip from 7f to 1m. Okay, he’s been finishing off his races well to suggest this extra furlong is within range, but I’m not so sure.
Is The Step Up To Mile Going To Suit?
He’s raced over 1m (or further) four times in the past and has not even been placed 6-8-4-8. The final worry, if I’d be backing No News, is the form of the Jenkins yard at Kempton.
They are operating on just a 6% return (5-from-85) and when you consider two of those wins were with No News, then really they’ve only had three winners at the track from their last 83 runners.
Hardly inspiring track stats and that coupled with the rise in the handicap and also the step up in trip, that he’s yet to win over, mean there’s enough to suggest looking elsewhere for the winner at the prices.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?
In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.
With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.
This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.
For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for ÂŁ10.
If the horse loses, you will win ÂŁ10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out ÂŁ20 (just like a bookmaker would).
See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for ÂŁ10.
You can see the liability if the horse wins would be ÂŁ18. Or if the horse loses you will win ÂŁ10 (less any commission).
