Lay Of The Day Horse Racing Tips: Tuesday 2nd January 2024
The UK and Ireland horse racing cards on Tuesday come from Fakenham, Ayr and Wolverhampton (AW). And you can join up with top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win a race.
See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day pick. A fancied horse that he’s taking on today with the best horse racing betting sites.
Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: FIA FUINIDH – 3:45 Ayr
This Martin Todhunter runner took a step forward last time out at Carlisle when runner-up on only his second run over fences. While Fia Fuinidh is also a proven course winner over hurdles, but there are a few questions for him to answer.
Firstly, he’s still to win over fences and also has just the one overall career win (7 runs). Yes, that success came at Ayr, but it was over the smaller obstacles and also off a 4lb lower mark, plus in a lesser grade.
The Todhunter yard are also just 3-from-37 (8%) with their runners at the Scottish track and boast a -24 points strike-rate over that period too.
Only five other runners running for us but they’ve all got a squeak, including the winner of the race last year – Escapeandevade, who will have champion jockey Brian Hughes doing the steering again. While the Stuart Coltherd yard have also won this race in the past and send Gandhi Maker to post.
Overall, it’s a race that Fia Fuinidh will be popular in after his improved run last time out but there are also enough doubts and others in the race with similar claims to suggest this Martin Todhunter runner is worth opposing on Tuesday.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?
In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.
With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.
This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.
For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1), then you could lay this horse for £10.
If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).
See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.
You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
