Andy Newton’s LAY OF THE DAY: 3:05 Catterick – POST CHAISE

The 7 year-old POST CHAISE comes here off the back of a win at Market Rasen, but that success came in very different race conditions.

Firstly, it was a chase race and he’s back over hurdles here and secondly the ground will be a lot softer here.

Okay, he’s got winning form with give underfoot, so that’s not really a negative and his hurdles rating is actually 4lbs lower than when successful over the bigger obstacles last time.

However, switching to hurdles on a lower mark doesn’t always pan out as the ratings suggest. It’s also worth pointing out that Post Chaise didn’t actually win his last race outright – he was awarded it after the first-past-the-post – Mixedwave – was disqualified for whip misuse.

But the big negative I’m clinging to here is the form of the Oliver Greenhall and Josh Guerriero yard. They’ve not had a winner in the last two weeks with their last 14 runners. While the track stats at Catterick tell us the stable are 0-from-10.

Add in jockey Henry Brooke’s stats at Catterick (3-from-47), then this coupled with the horse’s price looking a tad on the short side, then I’m happy to look elsewhere for the winner.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for ÂŁ10.

If the horse loses, you will win ÂŁ10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out ÂŁ20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for ÂŁ10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be ÂŁ18. Or if the horse loses you will win ÂŁ10 (less any commission).
