Champion Chase Clash Between Energumene and Edwardstone The Day Two Cheltenham Highlight
The meeting meeting last year’s Champion Chase winner Energumene and Arkle Chase hero Edwardstone is still on folks. The latest declaration stage saw the two big names in the betting hold their ground, with the Gary Moore-trained Editeur Du Gite next best in the market.
The current champ Energumene @ 15/8 with BetUK will be looking to join the likes of Altior and Masted Minded as past back-to-back winners of the race. While Edwardstone @ 7/4 with BetUK will be looking to become the eighth Arkle winner to follow up the following season in the Champion Chase.
It’s all set up to be a big ‘day two’ highlight with the horse that could upset the E vs E battle being Editeur Du Gite. This Gary Moore improving chaser beat the Edwardstone and Energumene in the Clarence House Chase last time at Cheltenham and is also likely to have his supporters too.
Blue Lord Still Entered but Ryanair Looks Preferred Option
Willie Mullins has also left in his Blue Lord in the race. This chaser was last seen flopping in the Dublin Chase at Leopardstown last time out, but many feel the Ryanair on Thursday will be his preferred target.
If so, Blue Lord @ 5/1 with BetUK (Ryanair) will take on the Nicky Henderson-trained Shishkin, who is the hot favourite.
Nube Negra, who was second in 2021 and last year’s silver medallist Funambule Sivola remain, as does the JP McManus runner Gentleman De Mee. The last-named will be looking to give the popular owner his first winner in this race.
Chacun Pour Soi and Coeur Sublime Taken Out
The two big names to come out of the 2023 Champion Chase were Chacun Pour Soi, who has been well-fancied in the past, but failed to show a liking for Cheltenham. Chacun Pour Soi still has entries in the Stayers’ Hurdle and Ryanair Chase.
While Coeur Sublime @ 12/1 with BetUK for Henry de Bromhead is expected to head for the Grand Annual Chase on the same Wednesday card.
