In a dramatic renewal of the King George VI Chase, the big Kempton Boxing Day race was one by the bargain buy Irish horse Hewick.
Hewick had traded over 500/1 in-running after looking beaten turning for home, but rallied uner jockey Gavin Sheehan to run down last year’s winner Bravemansgame and Allaho. While Shishkin, who had every chance in the closing stages, fell at the second last fence.
The win for Hewick also provided trainer John Joseph Hanlon and jockey Gavin Sheehan with their first winners in the King George.

How Much Has The King George Prize Money Increased Over The Years?
The popular grey Desert Orchid mopped up four King George VI Chases between 1986 and 1990, with the last of those successes bagging Dessie £45,190.
Another popular grey One Man won back-to-back King Georges in 1995 and 1996, and these won his owner John Hales £63,835 and £63,325.
Three time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate took his only King George in 2002 and in the process banked £87,ooo for his owner Jim Lewis.
Paul Nicholls won the King George in back-to-back years between 2005 and 2009 with Kauto Star and the last of those wins won the multiple grade one winner £114,020 for his owner Clive Smith.
Meaning that since 2009 (14 years), the King George Chase prize money has increased by £28,355.00 and works out around an average of just £2,000 per year.

Jump jockeys in UK horse racing will receive £214.63 for riding per race. While they also get a percentage of any winnings, with a jump’s rider getting around 11% of any win prize money and just under 3.5% of any place prize money.

The Paul Nicholls-trained Bravemansgame on the 2022 King George VI Chase and in the process banked £142,375 in prize money.
Bravemansgame (pictured) is owned by Bryan Drew, who would have received the bulk of the King George prize money after giving the jockey and trainer their cut – which is about 10% each.
Last year’s King George VI Chase winner, Bravemansgame, is also back for more in 2023 as he looks to join the likes of Clan Des Obeaux, Silviniaco Conti, Long Run, Kauto Star and Kicking King past tw0-time winners of the big Kempton race.
However, since winning the 2022 King George Chase, Bravemansgame is yet to win again – racing four times without success.
