Liverpool used to hold one of the best records in Premier League history for the longest home unbeaten streak under Jurgen Klopp. However, there have been some bad defeats at Anfield.
After their humiliating defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League last night, it sits firmly at the top of our list for the worst defeats at Anfield in Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.
Jurgen Klopp’s Worst Anfield Defeats
Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid, 2022/23
Liverpool’s embarrassing defeat to Real Madrid in their Champions League last-16 first leg tie will stick with fans for all the wrong reasons.
The night got off to a perfect start for Klopp’s side, with Darwin Nunez brilliantly flicking the ball into the back of the next to put them 1-0 up.
It was quickly followed up by a second goal, as Mohamed Salah took advantage of a huge Thibaut Courtois blunder which left the Reds 2-0 up after 14 minutes.
However, Madrid were not going out without a fight. Vinicius Junior pulled one back in some style as he smashed the ball beyond Allison.
He then doubled his tally for the day and levelled up the scores with the Liverpool goalkeeper gifting him a second goal.
Klopp’s men continued to crumble, as goals from Eder Militao put the visiting Spaniards 3-2 up just after half-time. Then Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema grabbed a handy brace to put the icing on the cake for Los Blancos.
What. A. Game.

Liverpool 1-4 Manchester City, 2021/22
This game was a significant one for Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who picked up his first managerial win at Anfield. It was also City’s first victory away at Liverpool since 2003.
City were in the mood from the off, and surprisingly the score was 0-0 at half-time after Ilkay Gundogan missed a first-half penalty. He’d soon make up for it though, as he opened the scoring on the 49th minute. Salah equalised shortly after for the hosts from the spot.
However, Liverpool could not hold on for at least a draw, and a late push from City seen them score three goals in 10 minutes as Gundogan picked up another, with Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden also getting in on the act to settle a big 4-1 win for Guardiola’s side.

Liverpool 0-1 Burnley, 2021/22
Liverpool were on a 68-game unbeaten run at home in the Premier League, and it came to an end back in 2021 as Burnley defeated the Reds at Anfield.
It took a late penalty from Ashley Barnes to settle the game, ending Liverpool’s four year run without losing at home in the league.
Jurgen Klopp had last lost a game at home all the way back in 2017 against Crystal Palace, and this loss against Burnley was a big one as Liverpool sat six points off the top of the table.
This game marked another successful trip to Anfield for the then-Sean Dyche led side. They’d earned a 1-1 draw the previous season, and that was the only home game in the league that Liverpool failed to win that season on their way to glory.

Liverpool 0-2 Everton, 2021/22
The Merseyside derby is always a fierce game, and this one was no different as Jurgen Klopp watched his title defence crumble at the hands of their closest rivals.
It was the first win at Anfield for the Toffees since 1999, and yet another occasion in which Carlo Ancelotti had beaten Klopp.
Everton took the lead after some brilliance from James Rodriguez to tee up Richarlison to them 1-0 up. Liverpool were not at the races this day, and ended up losing 2-0 with Gylfi Sigurdsson finishing off the job with a late penalty.
This result made it four defeats in a row for Klopp’s side.
Strike first. Strike hard. No Mersey. 🥋👊

Liverpool 1-2 Crystal Palace, 2016/17
Christian Benteke came back to haunt his former club as Crystal Palace came from behind to beat Liverpool at Anfield for the third season in a row.
Palace’s win this day was the last game that the Reds would lose on home turf for 68 games which spanned over four years.
Liverpool initially took the lead through a sensational free-kick from Philipe Coutinho, however Benteke would score two goals from close range to sink his former side.
It was a huge step towards survival for Palace, who jumped up four places in the table that day thanks to their big Belgian’s heroics.
