Golf star Jordan Spieth has confirmed he has a minority stake in Championship side Leeds United alongside Justin Thomas but without Rickie Fowler as initially planned.
Spieth and Thomas have purchased shares in the 49ers group, subject to EFL checks, and revealed that despite the club’s relegation he remains optimistic and excited about the future of the Lilywhites.
49ers Enterprises reached a £400m agreement to take over the club before the end of the last season, but following relegation a new £170m deal was renegotiated – which is still yet to be approved.
They have owned a stake in the club since 2018, initially 15% which later rose to 44%.
The pair, who have been close friends since they were 13, were able to get a better deal on their investment following the drop to the Championship.
Rickie Fowler was also amongst the initial discussions, but Spieth revealed he made a U-turn after Leeds were relegated from the Premier League earlier this year.
“Relegation wasn’t ideal, but we got involved with the 49ers group about purchasing a larger share and getting in with them doing things so successfully as they do everywhere they’ve touched.
“I’m excited to have a team I’m emotionally invested in. I’ve watched the Premier League intently for a few years. Hopefully, we’ll be back very soon.”

Spieth and Thomas could be in luck as Championship betting sites have handed Leeds a 9/4 chance of being promoted back to the Premier League next season and are an 8/1 shot to win the title.
The duo are currently in action at the Scottish Open ahead of the final major of the season next week, The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.
