In his first interview since completing a move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has claimed that ‘money has never been a motivation’ in his life and career.

Earlier in the summer transfer window, Jordan Henderson became one of several Premier League stars to switch England for the Middle East by joining a side in the Saudi Pro League.

Henderson, of course, linked up with former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq – ending a 12-year spell on Merseyside with the Reds.

It was a controversial move at the time for a variety of reasons, but mainly due to the 33-year-old previously being a vocal figure in support of LGBTQ+ communities, only to move to a country where being part of many of those groups is considered illegal.

The money being offered to Henderson was another factor that was well publicised, however in his first interview since making the move – the ex-Liverpool captain has claimed that ‘money has never been a motivation’ for him.

Speaking to The Athletic, Henderson denied that the move was purely based on financial gain, and revealed that a pre-season chat with Jurgen Klopp played a major factor.

“I won’t go into detail about the conversation [with Klopp] because it’s private, but it put me in a position where I knew that I wasn’t going to be playing as much. I knew there were going to be new players coming in my position,” he said.

“Now, that’s not to say that they forced me out of the club or they were saying they wanted me to leave but at no point did I feel wanted by the club or anyone to stay.

“People will see this club come with loads of money and he’s just gone, ‘Yeah, I’m going.’ When in reality that wasn’t the case at all. People can believe me or not, but in my life and my career, money has never been a motivation. Ever.”

Henderson then went on to claim that figures reported in terms of his salary by the media were incorrect.

“The numbers just aren’t true. But again, it had to work out for us financially as well. I’m not saying that it didn’t and I’m not saying, ‘Oh, I’m not on good money’ because it’s good money and it was a good deal but it wasn’t the numbers that were reported. No.”
