Will Frankie Dettori Be Riding In The Melbourne Cup 2023?

The short answer to this question is NO, Frankie Dettori will not be riding in this year’s Melbourne Cup. This comes after the “pocket Italian” picked up two whip bans totalling 16 days on British Champions Day at Ascot a couple of weeks ago.

Dettori was found to have used his whip once above the permitted six times when winning the Long Distance Cup aboard the John and Thady Gosden-trained Trawlerman in the opening race of the day. Considering the offence was in a Class 1 race, the original penalty of four days was doubled to an eight-day ban.

The next race on Champions Day saw Dettori narrowly beaten on Kinross in the British Champions Sprint. He was found to have used his whip one more time than permitted once again, resulting in another eight-day ban.

Frankie’s ban is set to kick in on November 7th, the day of the Melbourne Cup. This means he will have to wait until at least next year to win the race for first time.

The 52-year-old had planned to retire after the Melbourne Cup, but has now postponed his retirement to go and race full-time in America next year. So who knows, maybe Dettori could return to Flemington Park in 2024.

Dettori could have potentially partnered the Willie Mullins-trained Absurde, who he lifted to glory in the Ebor Handicap at York last time out.
