Former Premier League defender Jason Cundy has claimed that Virgil van Dijk is ‘overrated’ following Liverpool’s defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend.
Liverpool were on the end of a shocking 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, as the Cherries rose out of the relegation zone.
It comes just six days after the Reds’ emphatic 7-0 league victory over Manchester United at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp’s side looked nothing like the team that defeated the Red Devils at the Vitality however, as Bournemouth were deserved victors.
Phillip Billing scored the only goal of the game, turning home from Dango Ouattara’s cross after 28 minutes.

Many on social media credited the goal to poor Virgil van Dijk defending.
The Dutchman allowed Ouattara to beat him down the left, leaving Andy Robertson to deal with the Burkina Faso winger.
Criticism quickly rolled in from pundits and fans, with many suggesting that the 31-year-old costed Liverpool a vital three points.
Jason Cundy was one of those, as the former Chelsea and Spurs defender called Van Dijk ‘overrated’.
Jason Cundy’s Comments
Speaking to talkSPORT, Cundy did not shy away from heaping criticism on the defender.
“I think he’s overrated, personally. I think there’s a lot of media loving of what Van Dijk has done. No doubt he’s a brilliant centre half, [but] he makes too many mistakes,” Cundy said.
“Mistakes that I think go unnoticed. There was a goal they conceded when they went out a couple of seasons ago during COVID in the Champions League. And again, he has this languid style of running, he seems to try to buy time but doesn’t react.
“That is poor centre half play [when Van Dijk was outmuscled by Dominic Solanke] even though he’s on the other side.” he continued.
“I think he’s had a good 18 months and I know the injury has had an impact. But that goal today was not about the injury, that’s about his lack of, I can’t quite put my finger on it because once he [Ouattara] gets away from him inside, he seems to stop and misjudge the situation.”

❌ “He makes too many mistakes. He’s not fit to lace Terry or Rio’s boots.”
