With the UK and Ireland winning the bid to host the football 2028 European Championships, we ask – how often to the host nations win the Euros?
How Often Do Host Nations Win The Euros As UK and Ireland Win Bid To Stage 2028 Tournament?
The first ever Euros were staged in 1960, with France hosting the event which saw the Soviet Union beat Yugoslavia 2-1 (aet) in the final.
It was in the following event, four years later in 1964, that we witnessed the first Euro hosts winning the football competition as Spain beat the holders Soviet Union 2-1 in the final, which was played at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid.
With Italy hosting and also winning in 1968, there was a quick pattern building up with the sides staging the event seemingly having the upper hand – Italy saw off Yugoslavia in a replay that year in front of their home fans at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
The Last Winning Euro Hosts Where France In 1984
However, this run of host nations winning the Euros ended in 1972, when West Germany won the Belgium-staged event, and it wasn’t until 1984 when France won in their homeland that we saw another host win.
To this day, these three European Championship hosts – Spain, Italy and France – remain the only countries to win this quadrennial football tournament when performing the entertainment duties.
We have, however, also seen three other Euro host nations get to the final (but lose) and this trio have all come since 2004.
Hosts, Portugal (2004), France (2016) and England (2020) were almost added to the hosts winning record list but fell at the final hurdle when losing in finals on their home soil.
Therefore, over the years – from the 16 Euros played – we’ve had 38% of the hosts reach the final, with 19% winning.
- Euros: 16 Played
- Host winners: 3 (19%)
- Host runners-up: 3 (19%)
- Hosts reaching the final: 6 (38%)
England Will Look To Become Winning Euro Hosts In 2028
Despite winning the Euro 2028 hosting bid, the UK and Ireland will still need to qualify for their own event.
But should they get over this hurdle they will be hoping to become the next Euro hosts to win in their homeland.
England (and Ireland) have never won the Euros, with England finishing runners-up in 2020 being their best finish.
That year, the Three Lions lost to Italy in a dramatic penalty shootout after the game ended 1-1 in normal and extra-time.
