With Julen Lopetegui being shown the door at Wolves before the season has even begun, we take a look at how many Premier League managers were sacked during the 2022/23 campaign.

16 managers were sacked in total which was a new record for the Premier League – beating the previous record of just ten.

Premier League Managers Sacked 2022/23

  • Scott Parker – Bournemouth
  • Thomas Tuchel – Chelsea
  • Bruno Lage – Wolves
  • Steven Gerrard – Aston Villa
  • Ralph Hasenhuttl – Southampton
  • Frank Lampard – Everton
  • Jesse Marsch – Leeds
  • Nathan Jones – Southampton
  • Patrick Vieira – Crystal Palace
  • Antonio Conte – Tottenham
  • Brendan Rodgers – Leicester City
  • Graham Potter – Chelsea
  • Cristian Stellini – Tottenham
  • Javi Garcia – Leeds United
  • Ruben Selles – Southampton
  • Gary O’Neil – Bournemouth

Scott Parker – August 30th 2022

Scott Parker was the first manager to be dismissed last season and the Bournemouth boss was shown the door just five matches into the campaign after a tough start to life back in the first division.

It was perhaps Bournemouth’s infamous 9-0 loss to Liverpool that triggered the Cherries to part ways with Parker, who went on to manage Club Brugge for a disappointing 12 matches before he was yet again sacked.

Thomas Tuchel – September 7th 2022

The constant revolving door for managers at Chelsea last season was perhaps one of their biggest issues during a disappointing Premier League campaign that saw the Blues finish in 12th place.

Thomas Tuchel was the first Chelsea manager to be sacked last season and after winning just three of their opening six matches, some argued it was one of the harshest sackings of last year.

Bruno Lage – October 2nd 2022

Bruno Lage was the third manager to be sacked last season and it came as no surprise really, as the Wolves boss failed to make any improvements during the beginning of the year.

Lage was replaced by Julen Lopetegui shortly after and although the new Wolves manager was able to keep his side up last year, he was the first to be sacked this year before the season has even begun.

Steven Gerrard – October 20th 2022

With just one win in his opening nine Premier League matches last season, it was no shock to see Steven Gerrard sacked by Aston Villa following a horrible start to their campaign.

Unai Emery replaced Gerrard at Villa and pulled off a remarkable turnaround, as his side finished seventh which qualified them for the Conference League this season.

Ralph Hasenhuttl – November 6th 2022

Southampton had four different managers take charge last season, but they were still eventually relegated to the Championship in what was a horrific season.

Ralph Hasenhuttl was the first Saints boss to be sacked and after nearly five years at the club, it was tough for the Southampton board to release the Austrian.

Frank Lampard – January 23rd 2023

After the World Cup finished it wasn’t long before Frank Lampard was the next Premier League manager to be dropped, as the Everton boss was released following just 12 months in charge on Merseyside.

Five defeats in six games coupled with one of the worst starts to a Premier League campaign for Everton was enough to see Lampard sacked, although he did later come back to briefly manage Chelsea as interim manager.

Jesse Marsch – February 6th 2023

Leeds went seven games without a win before Jesse Marsch was sacked and after just over a year in charge it was a disappointing way to go out.

Javi Garcia took over at Leeds but his attempts to keep the Whites up was just as unsuccessful as Marsch, as they were eventually relegated after finishing 17th.

Nathan Jones – February 12th 2023

The second manager to be sacked by Southampton last season was Nathan Jones, who lasted just 14 games over the space of three months.

Jones lost seven of the eight Premier League games he managed and he was replaced by Ruben Selles, who took over as interim manager of the Saints for the remainder of the season.

Patrick Vieira – March 17th 2023

Patrick Vieira went 12 matches without a win before he was eventually given the sack after a disappointing loss to Brighton in March.

Palace hired Roy Hodgson to take over for the rest of the season and he was able to guide the Eagles to an 11th place finish which saved the side from any relegation battle.

Antonio Conte – March 26th 2023

Antonio Conte was sitting the highest in the table out of all the managers who were sacked when he was booted out last season, but Spurs were failing to live up to the standards expected of them.

Conte brutally laid into his side about the club’s culture in March before he was unsurprisingly sacked, with Cristian Stellini taking over for the rest of they year.

Brendan Rodgers – April 2nd 2023

Leicester City faced the drop last season and it was largely due to their failings at the beginning of the season that saw them return to the Championship.

Brendan Rodgers was sacked after four years in charge of Leicester, with the Foxes second bottom in the Premier League with just ten matches remaining in the season.

Graham Potter – April 12th 2023

The next Chelsea manager to be shown the door was former Brighton boss Graham Potter. A lot was expected of Potter when he arrived at Chelsea, but he lasted less than seven months in charge of the Blues.

Chelsea lost 11 games in 31 matches during Potter’s time in charge and despite signing a five-year contract when he made the move to Stamford Bridge, he was rather unceremoniously shown the door.

Cristian Stellini – April 25th 2023

Cristian Stellini was given the almost impossible task of reviving Tottenham’s season last year, but their top four hopes were thrown in the gutter after taking a 6-1 hammering to Newcastle.

Stellini failed to save Spurs’ season and they eventually finished in eighth place, meaning they didn’t qualify for European football for the first time in 13 years.

Javi Garcia – May 4th 2023

Leeds’ second manager of the season to be sacked was Javi Garcia, who lasted just 12 matches in charge before he was replaced by relegation specialist Sam Allardyce for the remainder of the season.

Allardyce failed to keep Leeds up though and they were relegated back to the Championship after just three seasons in the Premier League.

Ruben Selles – May 24th 2023

Ruben Selles was only ever an interim manager at Southampton so he wasn’t exactly sacked but was told that he wouldn’t be in charge next season following their relegation.

Russel Martin has taken over the Saints this year as they bid to make an immediate return to the Premier League after just one season away from the top flight.

Gary O’Neil – June 19th 2023

The final manager to be sacked last season was Gary O’Neil and the Bournemouth boss was rather surprisingly let go after he was able to keep the Cherries from relegation in an impressive season.

Andoni Iraola replaced O’Neil immediately on the South coast but there were still plenty of questions over why O’Neil was shown the door after surviving in the Premier League so impressively.
