The Cheltenham Festival Was Moved To Four Days In 2005
The Cheltenham Festival has not alway been held over four days though and, therefore, hasn’t always had 28 races attached to it.
Up until 2005, the Festival was staged over three days, with the action running over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
The Friday was added in 2005 and that become the new home for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. While to make sure each of the new four days would have six races each back then, five new races were formed.
Plus, since then another four races were introduced – including the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle and the Mares’ Chase – which is were the 28 tally stands at today (7 races per day)
