With the Cheltenham Festival looming large one proven way to find winners over the best four days of jumping action on the planet is to look out for past winners at the meeting. Therefore, with that in mind, we thought we’d look at the multiple 2024 Cheltenham Festival runners who already have at least TWO wins under their belts.
Who Are The Proven Cheltenham Festival Runners On Show In 2024?
The term ‘Horses for Courses’ is widely thrown about each year at all the big meetings, but it’s hard to ignore just how true this statement is at the Cheltenham Festival.
In recent times, we’ve had a stack of horses coming back year-after-year etch their names into the Festival folklore. So this year it’s certainly worth having on your punting radars ALL the 2024 Cheltenham runners that have already experienced the highs of the winners’ enclosure.
In fact, to add a bit more weight to our highlighted runners – we are only going to focus on the Festival runners that recorded at least TWO previous wins. There are ELEVEN to look out for.
2024 Cheltenham Runners That Have TWO+ Festival Wins
MINELLA INDO
Runs: 5
Won: (2) Gold Cup (2021) Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (2019)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Cross Country Chase (Weds, 13th March)
The first of our 2024 Cheltenham runners will be having his sixth Festival appearance this year. In addition to his two wins, which peaked with a Gold Cup success in 2021, this Henry De Bromhead runner has also been runner-up in the Gold Cup (2022) and RSA Novices’ Chase (2020). Meaning his overall record at this meeting is not to be sniffed at. At the age of 11 he now turns his hand to the Cross Country Chase on the Wednesday, where he’s a leading fancy with the best UK horse racing betting sites.
SIRE DU BERLAIS
Runs: 6
Races Won: (3) Pertemps Handicap Hurdle (2019 & 2020), Stayers’ Hurdle (2023)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Stayers’ Hurdle (Thurs, 14th March)
There isn’t a more experienced Cheltenham runner at the 2024 Festival than Sire Du Berlais, who will he having his seventh outing. Now aged 12, this JP McManus runner has three Festival wins, that include last season’s shock 33/1 Stayers’ Hurdle success, which added to his two Pertemps wins. He’s back for more in 2024 as he tries to defend his Stayers’ crown on the Thursday. If he wins again, you might not hear a bigger roar all week.
DELTA WORK
Runs: 5
Races Won: (3) Pertemps Handicap Hurdle (2018), Cross County Chase (2022 & 2023)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Cross Country Chase (Weds, 13th March)
Another stalwart of recent Cheltenham Festivals, with five past runs under his belt. This versatile Gigginstown House-owned 11 year-old also has three successes to his name, which include the last two runnings of the Cross Country Chase. He was also third in the 2022 Grand National and will be having his 37th career run, which will come in the Cross Country again. Can he join his former stablemate Tiger Roll on three wins in this Festival race?
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS
Runs: 3
Races Won: (2) Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (2021), Gold Cup (2023)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Gold Cup (Fri, 15th March)
Last year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner also makes the list as many might have forgotten he also won the 2021 Martin Pipe. In fact, Galopin Des Champs should probably be heading into the 2024 Festival with three wins at the meeting, having tumbled at the final fence in the 2022 Turners Novices’ Chase too. He’ll be aiming to follow in the footsteps of his former stablemate Al Boum Photo, who won back-to-back Gold Cups in 2019 and 2020. But prior to that, you have to go back to Best Mate (2002, 2003 & 2004) to find the last repeat winner in consecutive campaigns.
FLOORING PORTER
Runs: 3
Races Won: (2) Stayers’ Hurdle (2021 & 2022)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: NH Chase (Tues 12th March) & Stayers’ Hurdle (Thurs 14th March)
Took the Stayers’ Hurdle division by storm in 2021 and 2022 with his dominate front-running style and wasn’t disgraced when fourth in the same race in 2023. He’s been chasing this season – winning once here at Cheltenham – but despite having an entry in the NH Chase, connections are looking at a return to the race that’s already been so kind to him. If he can win again, he’d join Inglis Drever on the three wins mark in the Stayers’.
ENVOI ALLEN
Runs: 5
Races Won: (3) Champion Bumper (2019), Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle (2020) & Ryanair Chase (2023)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Ryanair Chase (Thurs 14th March)
Another Festival regular in recent times, with five runs at the meeting and from those outings has amassed three wins. These have also all come on different races, with his journey starting in the Champion Bumper in 2019. He added a Ballymore in 2020 and 12 months ago in 2023 took the Ryanair Chase. The race he’s entered for again in 2024.
SIR GERHARD
Runs: 3
Races Won: (2) Champion Bumper (2021) & Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle (2022)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Stayers’ Hurdle (Thurs 14th March)
The 2021 Champion Bumper winner also won the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle a year later and looked destined for the big time over fences. That hasn’t quite happened with only one success (from 5) over the bigger obstacles, so connections are looking at reverting him back to hurdles, where his record stands at 4-from-5. He currently holds an entry in the Stayers’ Hurdle on the Thursday.
CORACH RAMBLER
Runs: 2
Races Won: (2) Ultima Handicap Chase (2022 & 2023)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Ultima Handicap Chase (Tues 12th March) & Gold Cup (Fri 15th March)
The next of these 2024 Cheltenham runners needs little introduction as a lot of everyday punters will know him as the 2023 Grand National winner too. However, his Cheltenham Festival record is formidable. He’s yet to lose at this meeting from two runs. Both these successes came in the last two runnings of the Ultima Chase. He’s unlikely to run there again, as would have a welter weight to carry, with the Gold Cup on the Friday is target. Can he keep his Festival unbeaten record intact?
SAMCRO
Runs: 3
Races Won: (2) Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle (2018) & Marsh Novices’ Chase (2020)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: St James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase (Fri 15th March)
The horse Matt Chapman once billed as “the second coming” hasn’t quote lived up to that, but in his defence still has two Festival wins. These came in the 2018 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle and then a few years later in the 2020 Marsh Novices’ Chase. He’s now aged 12 and has been running in Point-to-Points – winning 4 of his last 5. He’ll be a popular pick in the Hunters’ Chase – the race after the Gold Cup.
SHISHKIN
Runs: 2
Races Won: (2), Supreme Novices’ Hurdle (2020) & Arkle Novices’ Chase (2021)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Gold Cup (Fri 15th March)
This talented Nicky Henderson-trained chaser is a ‘divider’ in terms of opinions. He’s got bags of ability but is not the most straightforward. That said, he’s still won 10 of his 15 chase runs and has two Festival successes to his name – Supreme and Arkle. After another mixed season, but this Joe Donnelly-owned runner got his act together by winning the Denman Chase last time. The 10 year-old will be hoping to build on that by serving it up to Galopin Des Champs in Friday’s Gold Cup.
MONKFISH
Runs: 2
Races Won: (2) Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle (2020), Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (2021)
Cheltenham Festival 2024 Entries: Stayers’ Hurdle (Thurs 14th March) & Gold Cup (Fri 15th March)
One of the forgotten horses in recent seasons, but has been nursed back to form by Willie Mullins and it’s worth noting he’s another rare 2024 Cheltenham Festival runner that brings a 100% record to the meeting. His two past runs resulted in wins in the Albert Bartlett and the Brown Advisory. He’ll be looking to remain unbeaten in the Stayers’ Hurdle on the Thursday.
