Nine games remain for Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal in what is shaping up to be a genuine three-horse title race. Rivals, fans and spectators will be revising the final few fixtures to identify any potential slip-ups. Tottenham could have the final say on the title race, so too Aston Villa – here’s how.
Tottenham Could Have The Final Say On The Title Race
Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal all face Aston Villa and Tottenham in their final few games of the season. Both Aston Villa and Tottenham are going toe-to-toe for a fourth place finish themselves, so there is extra impetus to register a victory of their own.
Tottenham blinked against West Ham in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw, but Aston Villa must go to the Etihad in midweek and capitalise on another Spurs slip-up. SportsLens have already explored just how difficult an opponent Villa were for Manchester City in their first meeting of the season, although facing them in Manchester is a different task entirely – just ask Arsenal.
Manchester City’s Record Against Tottenham a Worry
Starting off with Manchester City, who have a notoriously bad record against Tottenham.
Since the 2018/19 season, Manchester City have not gone a season without dropping points against Spurs. In nine recent Premier League meetings; Spurs have won four compared to Manchester City’s three with the two remaining ending in a draw.
Tottenham have also tormented City in the Champions League too in that classic from the 2018/19 season campaign which saw Spurs make it all the way to the final.
Earlier on in the season, Spurs held them to a 3-3 draw at the Etihad. These two would’ve faced each other again at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on the 20th April but due to Manchester City’s FA Cup commitments, it will be postponed to a later date.
Aston Villa are also just one of three teams who have beaten Manchester City this season. Leon Bailey’s strike back in December was enough to get all three points at Villa Park.
City’s defence is appearing increasingly fragile with Kyle Walker, Nathan Ake and Ederson all expected to miss the game against Aston Villa. Can the Villans expose Manchester City’s defence?
Manchester City v Aston Villa will be broadcasted on TNT Sports and the Discovery+ app on Wednesday 3rd April with an 20:15pm kick-off.
Could Tottenham End Arsenal’s title hopes?
Like Manchester City, Arsenal have also not won a game against Tottenham or Aston Villa this season. The North London derby ended 2-2 and the Gunners were beaten 1-0 by Aston Villa.
Arsenal face both sides again in April as Mikel Arteta’s side look to try and overtake Liverpool once again as league leaders.
Arsenal’s record away to Tottenham doesn’t look great on paper. Since 2015, Arsenal have only won once in eight away games to Tottenham. Is a slip-up likely on the cards?
Can Liverpool handle Villa and Spurs?
Current leaders Liverpool overcame Aston Villa 3-0 earlier on in the season at Anfield, but their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium will be still be engraved in the minds of many Liverpool fans for obvious reasons.
Luis Diaz thought he had opened the scoring but was flagged offside. On replays, it showed that he was clearly onside but a mixup in the VAR room lead to the onfield decision staying and Liverpool were robbed of a lead.
Liverpool were also aggrieved as Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off for tackles that shouldn’t have been deemed as reckless.
Joel Matip ended up putting the ball in his own net with the last kick of the game to give Tottenham a 2-1 win. Could Liverpool and Aston Villa be looking back at that game in anger come the end of the season?
Liverpool’s record against both teams is solid given the domination that Jurgen Klopp has given his side over the years but anything is possible in this crazy title race. Could Liverpool experience Premier League heartbreak once more?
