Gordon Elliott 2023 Cheltenham Festival Runners To Look For
Gordon Elliott has sent out 33 Cheltenham Festival winners over the years, but suprisingly he’s only landed one of the big races – Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase, Stayers’ Hurdle, Ryanair Chase and Gold Cup – once and that came in the Gold Cup in 2016 with Don Cossack.
However, the County Meath handler has a good chance of adding to that haul of Cheltenham Festival winners in 2023 – we take a look at some of his best chances.
Delta Work, Mighty Potter and Teahupoo Big Cheltenham Chances For Elliott
Chemical Energy (NH Challenge Cup Chase): This has been Gordon Elliott’s best Cheltenham Festival race, with four wins over the years. He’s seemingly got another cracking chance of adding to that tally in 2023 with this 7 year-old. Was 8th in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle last year and was a monster 61 length winner at Cheltenham back in October.
Delta Work (Cross Country Chase): Another race the Elliott yard like to target at the Festival – winning the prize four times – twice with former Grand National legend Tiger Roll and also 12 months ago with Delta Work who is back for more. Delta Work also went onto run third in the Grand National in 2022 and has warmed up for this with a fine third (giving weight away) over these unique fences in January, but back on level weights looks the one to beat again. Also won the Pertemps Network Hurdle in 2018. Elliott could also have Galvin running here.
Gerri Colombe (Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase): Improving staying novice chaser that will head to the Cheltenham Festival 3-from-3. His latest win came at Sandown in the Grade One Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at the start of February and has looked better the further he’s gone in his races so the step up in trip to 3m 1/2f looks sure to suit.
Mighty Potter (Turners Novices’ Chase): Pulled up in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last season but has made a better transition to chasing – winning all three starts. The most recent was a facile success in the Grade One Ladbroke Novice Chase at the Dublin Racing Festival and if repeating that one looks the one to beat.

Teahupoo (Stayers’ Hurdle): Prolific winner over hurdles that has won 8 of his 11 starts. Therefore, no shock to see him as one of the leading fancies for the Stayers’ Hurdle – one of the day three highlights. Heads into the race off the back of two more wins, the last being a smooth 15 length success in the Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park.
Fury Road (Ryanair Chase): The Ryanair Chase has so far eluded trainer Gordon Elliott, but he’s got a fair chance of breaking that duck in an open-looking renewal. This 9 year-old is also owned by Michael O’Leary, the Ryanair boss, so will be keen to win back his sponsorship. Fury Road was last in action running a fair third to the current Gold Cup favourite Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup, but looks the sort to be suited by the drop back in trip that the Ryanair will provide.
Conflated (Gold Cup): Winner of the 2022 Irish Gold Cup and also the Savills Chase over Christmas. Bypassed the Dublin Racing Festival so heads here fresh. Fell late on in the Ryanair Chase at the Festival last year when probably booked for second – would be looking to give Elliott his second Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, having taken the Blue Riband in 2016 with Don Cossack.
Maxxum (Pertemps Network Final Hurdle): This is always a very competitive contest, and this year looks no different, but it’s also a race Elliott likes to target – winning it three times since 2018. This 6 year-old has won two of his last three starts and despite being a disappointing favourite last time at Leopardstown was found to have sustained a cut during that race. Looks the sort to have more to come and no shock to see him bounce back.
