Amid an ongoing feud between Barcelona and La Liga, the latest Gavi transfer news makes for unsettling reading for Blaugrana fans after he was removed as a Barcelona first team player on the league’s official website.
Gavi had previously signed a contract extension in September of last year, but Barcelona’s well-documented struggle to align with La Liga‘s Financial Fair Play regulations prolonged his registration to the first team.
The league leaders did however manage to obtain a precautionary court measure in order to push thorough the contract on deadline day in January, but the corruption hangover from former president Josep Bartomeu still lingers with La Liga intent on upholding the integrity of the division.
As a result, the league lodged an appeal against the ‘Golden Boy’s’ registration, and a Commercial Court in the city overturned the measure. The club then attempted to appeal against the latest decision, but that plea was dismissed by the court earlier this week.
It now means Gavi remains registered as a youth player despite making 37 first team appearances under Xavi this season, and quickly rising to prominence as one of the club’s brightest talents amid a spectacular resurgence in form.
Barcelona’s appeal to register Gavi has been rejected in court, meaning he will return to a youth contract and lose his No. 6 shirt.

A telling sign of La Liga’s refusal to cower under the pressure of its heavyweights can be found on the Barcelona section of its official website, where Gavi no longer appears under the midfield subsection.
The Catalan giants have grappled with the league for several years as they desperately attempt to balance their wage bill, which needs to be reduced by around €200m by the beginning of next season.
Returning president Joan Laporta has taken drastic measures in order to secure the long-term future of the club, enacting several ‘economic levers’ such as selling off their rights to merchandising and broadcasting. This has effectively allowed them to remain competitive in the transfer window, where they managed to bring in high-profile names such as Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha last summer, albeit with a strong resistance from La Liga.
