Gary Neville has revealed how Steven Gerrard reacted when he tried luring him from Liverpool to Manchester United back in the day.

Gerrard, renowned for his lengthy tenure at Liverpool, was persistently linked with moves away from Anfield. European giants such as Chelsea and Real Madrid famously made concrete attempts to sign the midfielder.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville disclosed on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast that he also made an effort to convince Gerrard to join the Red Devils.

Neville shared, “Stevie [Steven Gerrard] told this in his book, where I went into his room with England and asked him to sign for Manchester United.

I was meeting up with England for the Euros, and he [Sir Alex Ferguson] rang me and said it’s ambitious, but his words were, ‘Tell him I’ll go and fetch him, and I’ll walk him back down the East Lancs’.”

Gerrard: “Me and My Family Would Never Get Out Of Liverpool”

“I went to see Stevie, and he quite categorically [rejected it] pretty quickly. He said he would never get out of Liverpool, and his family would never get out of Liverpool.”

Having been a lifelong Liverpool fan, Gerrard has previously spoken of the significance of playing for the club, emphasising the sentimental value of sharing success with his family and the Liverpool supporters.

Gerrard’s illustrious career at Liverpool spanned 710 appearances across all competitions, yielding 185 goals.

The former England captain won various honours during his time at Anfield, including three League Cups, two FA Cups, and triumphs in the FA Community Shield, Champions League, UEFA Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.

He ultimately departed for MLS outfit LA Galaxy in 2015 before retiring a year later.

Gerrard transitioned to managerial roles at Rangers and Aston Villa. Presently, at 43 years old, he manages Saudi Professional League side Al Ettifaq.
