Chelsea midfielder, Fran Kirby, has been recalled into the England squad for the first time since her knee operation.

Kirby missed the Women’s World Cup after having surgery on a knee injury in May.

Over the weekend, Kirby started her first game in eight months as she helped Chelsea win against West Ham.

On her decision to recall Kirby, England manager Sarina Wiegman said:

“Of course it’s very nice Fran is back on the pitch and she’s fit and healthy,

“I thought she played very well when she came back [for Chelsea]. She’s been building up to those moments in the summer.

“She has shown enough quality in her performance that I think it’s good she comes back into the team. She was really happy when I called her and she’s good to go.”

What is Kirby’s record for England?

Before her injury, Kirby was a crucial part of the England set up. Kirby was part of the England team that won the European Championship in 2022.

Since making her debut in 2014, Kirby has played 65 times for the national side. In those 65 games, she has scored 17 England goals.

As one of the most recognisable names in the women’s game, England will welcome her back with open arms for these Nations League games.
