FIFA Women’s World Cup organisers believe a record two billion people could watch the tournament this year, but how does this rank amongst other major sporting events?

The 2019 tournament in France attracted 1.12 billion viewers according to football’s world governing body FIFA, but the chief executive of Football Australia James Johnson believes that number could double for the 2023 edition.

“We think that’s achievable. We know we’ll get a good audience from the traditional football markets. We’re also in a time zone where all the big populations are. So there’s going to be so many people that would tune in and watch this competition.

“You’re going to have two billion people that are going to watch this tournament from all over the world.”

How would this rank against the world’s most popular sporting events, though? Let’s take a look.

Most Watched Major Sporting Events

  • Tour de France (Cycling) – 3.5 billion viewers
  • Men’s World Cup (Football) – 3.3 billion viewers
  • Men’s World Cup (Cricket) – 2.6 billion viewers
  • Olympic Summer Games (Multi-sport) – 2 billion viewers
  • Olympic Winter Games (Multi-sport) – 2 billion viewers
  • *2023 Women’s World Cup (Football) – 2 billion viewers*
  • UEFA Champions League Final (Football) – 380 million viewers
  • Super Bowl (American football) – 112 million viewers

Two billion viewers would elevate the Women’s World Cup above the Champions League final, Super Bowl and many more of the globe’s most talked about sporting events.

It remains to be seen whether the tournament will be able to reach these figures, but the executives behind it believe it to be entirely possible.
