Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal are continuing contract negotiations with William Saliba as Bukayo Saka’s extension is nearing completion.

William Saliba has been an ever-present figure in the Arsenal defence this season, starting all 24 of their Premier League matches. The 21-year-old is considered to be one of the best up and coming defenders in world football, and according to Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners are looking to tie him down long-term.

Reports have suggested that the Frenchman wants to stay at the Emirates, with the club continuing negotiations with the player as Bukayo Saka’s contract extension nears completion.

The Italian journalist has previously stated that the Gunners have reached a verbal agreement with Saka over a new contract, with a long term deal having always been a priority. The Hale End product is said to have always wanted to stay at the club, with his new contract believed to be until the summer of 2028.

Romano has said that talks over details of the Saliba deal – including the salary and structure of the contract are ongoing, but says that talks aren’t quite at the final stage yet.

Saliba spent last season out on loan with Ligue 1 side Marseille, and had his contract extended by a year upon his return to London. The defender’s current contract keeps him at the club until the summer of 2024, as talks continue over a longer term deal.

The French international was part of the France squad for the recent World Cup in Qatar. He made one appearance under Didier Deschamps at the competition, being introduced as a substitute in the 1-0 group loss to Tunisia.

He has been a vital cog in the Arsenal defence this season, as the Gunners push for their first league title in over 20 years.
