Everton vs Newcastle Report: Trippier Mistakes Prove Costly

The first half of Everton Newcastle was a fairly closely fought one, with Newcastle dominating possession but struggling to create any chances while the hosts looked closer to scoring with their few opportunities.

Miguel Almiron had a good opportunity early on, but he couldn’t quite sort his feet out in the box and dragged his shot that turned out to be an easy enough save for Jordan Pickford.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin was a doubt coming in to the game on Thursday night, but after passing a late fitness test the striker was able to start and was in the thick of the action during the first period.

The 26-year-old found himself in a perfect position to score just before the break, but after chesting the ball down, the Everton man managed to blaze the ball well over the bar from point blank range.

Alexander Isak had the best opportunity for the visitors in the first half but he watched his header fly past the post, with the first half ending goalless despite chances for both sides.

The game continued in the same fashion throughout the second half and although it seemed like the match may end all square, Dwight McNeil managed to provide a breakthrough with just ten minutes left.

Kieran Trippier was guilty of giving possession away in defence, with McNeil pouncing on the loose ball and driving forwards to the edge of the box before unleashing a wicked shot past Martin Dubravka in net.

Newcastle’s full back yet again misplaced the ball in his own half just five minutes later, with Jack Harisson driving a low cross off McNeil in the box before Abdoulaye Doucoure smashed in Everton’s second of the game.

As the Magpies pushed for any late salvation deep into added time they were left exposed at the back, with Everton substitute Beto sprinting half the pitch before nutmegging Dubravka in net to put a perfect seal on a huge Everton upset.
