Everton’s odds of being relegated from the Premier League have been priced at 6/5 after the Toffees were defeated 2-0 at home by Aston Villa this afternoon.

Ahead of kick-off, the Toffees knew that a loss could see them finish the day in the relegation zone – depending on results in other matches.

Some fine early stops from Jordan Pickford on his 350th Everton appearance kept them in the game early on, as Aston Villa looked threatening.

Neal Maupay went close after 30 minutes – heading just wide of the post in Everton’s first real opportunity of the match.

Amadou Onana almost opened the scoring with a header just minutes later, but World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez superbly denied the Frenchman.

Neither side could convert their chances for the remainder of the half, as the teams returned to the changing rooms goalless at the break.

18 minutes into the second 45 saw Everton hand Villa a golden opportunity to open the scoring. John McGinn was brought down in the box, and the referee pointed straight to the spot. In-form forward Ollie Watkins claimed the penalty, and dispatched perfectly to hand the visitors the lead.

Watkins has now netted in each of his last five Premier League appearances.

It went from bad to worse for the Toffees, with Villa netting their second in the 81st minute. Emi Buendia broke past the Everton defence, and slotted perfectly past Pickford with his left-foot to double the advantage.

As if it couldn’t get any worse for Sean Dyche’s side – both Leeds United and West Ham secured victories, sending the Toffees back into the relegation zone.
