Erling Haaland Has Played Against Bayern Munich More Than Any Other Side, Losing Every Meeting So Far

Manchester City welcome Bayern Munich to the Etihad Stadium this evening, as the Champions League’s joint favourites go face-to-face for the first time in nearly a decade. One particular narrative that has emerged ahead of what promises to be a relentless tie is the Erling Haaland vs Bayern Munich ‘curse’, which never yielded throughout his time in Germany.

Erling Haaland vs Bayern Munich Curse

Pep Guardiola vs Thomas Tuchel. Joint-favourite vs joint-favourite. A Bayern team that still has Guardiola’s fingerprints all over it. There are many narratives swirling around this evening’s fixture, and as Manchester City attempt to lift their Champions League curse that has so far taken them to just one final throughout Guardiola’s tenure, there is another curse to contend with.

Erling Haaland enjoyed an overwhelming period of personal success while representing former club Borussia Dortmund, scoring 86 goals in 89 appearances across a two-year spell, earning him a dream move to the club that his father had played for two decades prior.

It would certainly be foolish to bet against Haaland, particularly given his other-worldly goalscoring exploits this term; 44 goals in 38 appearances so far. However, he holds a rather unsettling record against Bayern Munich, who also happen to be the team he has faced more than any other team in his career to date.

The serial Bundesliga winners proved to be the Norwegian’s scourge, winning the league title in each of his three seasons in Germany, while also defeating Dortmund in each of the seven meetings he featured in.

Despite his dismal record in ‘Der Klassiker’, the 22-year-old still managed to register five goals across the head-to-heads, and with his stats becoming ever-more prolific, Bayern and new manager Thomas Tuchel will not be looking to his ‘curse’ as a sign of comfort.
