Erik ten Hag is facing sharp criticism from former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood for Manchester United’s disappointing performance this season.

Sherwood accuses Ten Hag of regressing the team and places the blame squarely on the manager, rejecting excuses like ownership issues and injuries.

The ex-Tottenham boss thinks the Dutchman’s tactics have been questionable and claims that he haphazardly fields players without a clear strategy. Despite United’s dramatic late comeback over Brentford, Sherwood remains unimpressed.

Speaking on William Hill’s No Tippy Tappy Podcast, Sherwood said, “Ten Hag has taken the club backwards, and I don’t believe what he is doing is good enough.

“I don’t think those late goals make him a better manager, and we have to think the same about him as we would if they had lost the game.”

Sherwood Says McTominay Bailed Ten Hag Out

In particular, Sherwood credits academy product Scott McTominay with rescuing Ten Hag from precarious situations. “McTominay has had an incredible couple of weeks,” Sherwood said. “He was phased out at Man Utd and had Hannibal Mejbri ahead of him.

“Since then, he’s come off the bench, not sulking, with a point to prove, and he’s scored two match-winning goals. You only get that from an academy player who really loves the club. He has got Ten Hag out of the mire.”

Furthermore, Sherwood calls out some of the senior players, including Raphael Varane, for inconsistent performances and fitness issues. He believes that while Harry Maguire faces criticism, Varane often escapes scrutiny despite his lacklustre showings and frequent injuries.

Sherwood also firmly rejects the idea that the potential takeover saga is an excuse for the team’s poor results. He argues that regardless of ownership or management changes, the performance on the pitch is the responsibility of the manager and the players.

As the pressure on Erik ten Hag continues to mount, Manchester United return to Premier League action on Saturday night at Sheffield United.
