England’s under 21’s have been crowned European Champions despite late drama and a penalty for Spain, as the Three Lions won the eventful final 1-0.

Cole Palmer’s free kick took a deflection off Curtis Jones deep into added time in the first half, with England taking a decisive lead just before the break.

Ashley Cole was shown a straight red on the England bench just after the goal was scored, following an altercation with one of Spain’s coaches who was also dismissed.

The second half was a tense one throughout and although Spain failed to find a breakthrough during the second period, they were given one final chance to send the game to extra time deep into added time.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill brought down Abel Ruiz in the box in the 96th minute and the referee correctly gave a penalty after consulting the VAR.

James Trafford didn’t concede a goal throughout the entire tournament and he managed to keep that record with a sensational double save to deny Spain a chance in extra time, as England were dramatically crowned champions.

After the match, Trafford said: “I told everyone this morning I was going to save a penalty. I knew I was going to save it.” Showing extreme confidence in the biggest moment of his career.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Antonio Blanco were both shown red cards in the 100th minute, with the players clashing on the bench as emotions escalated late on.

The red cards will be forgotten in the grand scheme of things, as England under 21’s were named European Champions for the first time in 39 years.
