Energumene and Edwardstone Head Just 3 Possible 2023 Clarence House Chase Runners

The 2023 Clarence House Chase will see a maximum of just three runners for the Ascot Grade One contest on Saturday, but the good news for horse racing fans is that Energumene and Edwardstone are two of the remaining trio which sets-up a ‘must-see’ head-to-head.

**Note** The 2023 Clarence House card at Ascot (21st Jan) was called off due to a frozen track, but the race has been moved to Cheltenham Trials Day fixture on Sat 28th January.

2023 Clarence House Will Have a Maximum Of Three Runners

Saturday’s 2023 Clarence House Chase, which is staged at Ascot racecourse, will have only three runners heading to post – and that’s providing the remaining trio stand their ground at the final declaration stage on Thursday!

Yes, the Ascot Grade One, which is often a good guide towards the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, was cut to pieces on Monday with the big two in the betting – Energumene and Edwardstone – seemingly scaring off the opposition. The Joe Tizzard-trained Amarillo Sky is the third possible runner.

Energumene vs Edwardstone Clarence House Chase Clash Is Still On

Despite there only being three entries for the 2023 Clarence House Chase, the relief for Ascot racecourse and horse racing fans is that two of the trio are the big-guns Energumene, who was runner-up in this race last year (watch below) and Edwardstone, which sets up a similar Shishkin/Energumene clash that we saw 12 months ago.

The Willie Mullins-trained Energumene won the 2022 Champion Chase and is the odds-on favourite to defend his crown on Wednesday March 15th 2023 @ 4/6 with BetUK, but next best in the betting is Edwardstone @ 11/4, who he’ll be taking on this Saturday.

Therefore, you feel a win for Energumene will further cement his place at the head of the 2023 Queen Mother Champion Chase betting market, while if last year’s Arkle Chase winner Edwardstone can win there is every chance he might overhaul the Mullins horse as favourite for the day two Cheltenham Festival showcase race.

Small Field The Norm These Days For This Ascot Grade One

It’s a shame, but it seems the Ascot Grade One Clarence House Chase is now a race that only attracts a handful of runners. Many horse racing fans will have their theories to why this is – maybe there just isn’t that many good enough 2m chasers at the moment, or that some of the other Irish stars of this division prefer to stay at home for the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown (4-5th Feb).

Regardless, the Clarence House Chase will only have a maximum of three runners again in 2023 and that is hot on the heels of only 4 runners in 2022. Yes, in 2021, when First Flow won the race, there was a much-improved 8 runners, but that was only a mini-spike as in 2018 and 2020 there were 5 runners and in 2019 Altior beat just two others at odds of 1/10.

Amarillo Sky Looks Booked for Third, But Can Still Pick Up Over ÂŁ15k

The good news for connections of Amarillo Sky – the only other possible Clarence House 2023 runner – is that providing he stays on his feet he’s still booked for ÂŁ16,050 (which is what First Flow received for the bronze medal in 2022).

Amarillo Sky is rated 151, which is 25lbs behind Energumene and 19lbs adrift of Edwardstone, but with the last-named unseating last time out, then you never know a third could easily turn into a second and even more prize money.

If a fourth horse did hold its ground in the 2023 Clarence House entries, they would have got ÂŁ9,327 if also finishing in that position in the race.
