Saturday’s Group One Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown will see the John Gosden-trained Emily Upjohn as one of the big fancies to give her stable their fifth win in the race
Gosden won the lucrative pot back in 2019 with another superstar mare – Enable – so will be trying to repeat the feat this weekend. With Frankie Dettori banned at the moment, the ride has been handed to William Buick, but he’s no stranger to winning this Sandown race having taken gold three times in the past, including once for Gosden (Nathaniel, 2012).
Emily Upjohn was last seen running away with the Coronation Cup at Epsom in early June (watch below) and unlike her main rival Paddington, who is yet to race beyond a mile, is proven over the Eclipse trip of 1m2f. We also know Emily Upjohn stays further than this distance, which is something jockey William Buick is sure to make full use of.
She’ll be looking to become only the third winning 4 year-old to win the Coral Eclipse since 2007, plus being older than Paddington has to also give away 7lbs to the Aidan O’Brien runner – can she do it?
