Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has given a worrying Harvey Barnes injury update after the forward was forced off after just 12 minutes with a “substantial” foot injury in the 8-0 win over Sheffield United.

Harvey Barnes Injury Update: Winger Set For “Months” Out

The 25-year-old limped off with the scoreline still 0-0 after 12 minutes on Sunday and has had a scan on his foot since the game. However, the club are waiting to see if surgery is required.

Barnes has made seven appearances for Newcastle so far since signing from Championship leaders Leicester City, scoring just once. It was only his second start for the club, but he could now be out until at least December.

Howe was speaking before his side’s Carabao Cup meeting with Manchester City on Wednesday.

“It’s an injury to a part of the foot just below the toe, I think it’s quite a substantial injury,” said the Newcastle boss.

“We’ve had it scanned, we’re waiting now for a specialist’s opinion on what to do next, whether there’s surgery involved or not. I don’t want to put a time on it until we get confirmation from the specialist, but I think it will be months rather than weeks.”

The Magpies face Manchester City in the cup on Wednesday, a game which Barnes would likely have started had he been fit.

Howe added: “He was down after the game because he knew it wasn’t a normal injury where you feel a muscle and think that might be one or two weeks. This was a slightly more complex issue.”
