Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot is reportedly close to signing a new long-term deal with the club, after having his current contract extended.

United were set to lose several players this summer, due to contract expirations, but excercised four one-year contract extensions to give more time to discuss long-term contract options.

Dalot, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford and Fred were all handed an extra year to their contract, confirmed by Erik ten Hag in late December, but did not choose to trigger David de Gea’s one-year extension.

If the Red Devils had triggered de Gea’s extension, they would be required to pay him the same salary, and the club are said to be wanting the Spanish goalkeeper to take a pay-cut to remain at the club beyond the summer.

All four of the players that were handed extensions by ten Hag have had plenty of involvement for United this season.

Dalot impressed in pre-season and before the World Cup, being the preferred starting right-back for ten Hag, but has struggled with injury since January, leaving him sidelined.

The Portuguese international was said to have interest from the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid and Barcelona, and doubts were cast over his future in Manchester.

But it now looks as if 23-year-old is close to penning a new deal with the Red Devils.

A reported published by Spanish media has claimed that Barcelona’s hunt for Dalot is coming to an end, with Manchester United’s contract negotiations being at an ‘advanced stage’.

United are said to have tabled a five-year contract offer, with the club and Dalot’s camp having been in talks since the player’s return from the World Cup.

“We are in a position to say that we are negotiating and seeing how both parties will benefit, but it is no secret that I am happy to be here, so we will see how things go,” Dalot said last month.

“I love this club and I love to play for this club. Progressively we are in a good direction as a team.

“For me, this is the most important part and hopefully individually I can continue to help the team as I am doing.”
