Thunder Rock The December Gold Cup Favourite
The December Gold Cup odds see the Olly Murphy-trained THUNDER ROCK propping up the betting with the best UK betting sites.
This improving 7 year-old has been the subject of plenty of support in the build-up to Saturday’s race and after a facile win at Carlisle last month it’s easy to see why.
Thunder Rock beat Mahler Mission that day at the northern track by 3 1/2 lengths and that form was given a shot in the arm with the runner-up taking silver in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury next time.
With that race also being a Listed Chase, there is no handicap movement on Thunder Rock’s rating (146).
6 and 7 Year-Olds Have A Good Record In The Race
We’ve also seen 60% of the last 20 December Gold Cup winners aged either 6 or 7, so Thunder Rock ticks this stat, while 15 of the last 20 winners were also placed in the top three last time out.
Thunder Rock is also no stranger to running at Cheltenham. He’s raced there twice and despite not winning at Prestbury Park yet was a fair 6th in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season.
He just got tired that day over the longer 3m 1/2f trip, so the return to 2m4f is a big plus. (Watch below)

Do The December Gold Cup Favourites Have A Good Record?
Thunder Rock does seem to have plenty going for him, but there is one BIG December Gold Cup stat he’ll need to defy.
This Cheltenham race has been a graveyard for favourites over the years. Just one winning market leader in the last 20 renewals means Thunder Rock (if he does go off as the jolly) has to kick into touch a 95% stat that’s against him.
The last December Gold Cup favourite to win was Poquelin in 2009 when returning the 7/2 market leader.
Trainer Paul Nicholls Looking For His Sixth December Gold Cup Win
The already mentioned Poquelin was also trained by Paul Nicholls and there is no handler with a better December Gold Cup record than him.
Nicholls has won five December Gold Cups over the years, with his first being Poquelin in 2009. The same horse backed that up a year later in 2010, while he had another double winner in Frodon in 2016 and 2018.
Unioniste sandwiched these two Nicholls winners, when landing the big Cheltenham festive prize in 2012.
