May Hill Stakes Tip: Dance In The Grass To Mow Rivals Down
DANCE IN THE GRASS @ 10/11 with BetUK is one of just two fillies that head into Thursday’s May Hill Stakes unbeaten and we think she can remain with that record intact. She’s caught the eye in winning both career starts at Sandown and even though she didn’t win by far last time (1/2) had matter well in-hand in the Listed Star Stakes (watch below).
Those opening victories both also came over 7f, but the way she’s been winning suggests this step up to 1m for this Cracksman filly to be right up her street – and her breeding backs this theory up.
She’s also the top-rated in the field and will have every assistance in the saddle with jockey William Buick booked to ride. A win here and that will see her odds of @ 8/1 with BetUK for the Newmarket Fillies’ Mile on Oct 7th shorten further.
Recent Sandown Win Has Been Franked Since
Other plus, for Dance In The Grass seems to the solid-looking form his recent Sandown Listed win is having. The second – Fairy Cross – has since come out and landed the Group Three Prestige Stakes at Goodwood at the end of August to give a bit more substance to the recent run of Dance In The Grass.

18 of The Last 20 May Hill Stakes Winners Were Foaled in Feb, Mar or April
Being a 2 year-old race then looking when a horse was foaled can be key. These young horses can improve a lot during the early part of their races and even though aged a few months older can have an advantage.
This particular race has seen 90% of the last 20 winners foaled in Feb, March or April – of the 10 runners just this horse falls down here – Cell Sa Beela (Jan).

12 of the last 16 May Hill Stakes Winners Returned 4/1 Or Shorter
The May Hill Stakes has also been a good race for punters, with 7 of the last 20 favourites winning and 12 of the last 16 winners returning 4/1 or shorter in the betting. This year we’ve probably only two horses that fit the bill here – the likely market leader, Dance In The Grass and the Andrew Balding-trained Frankness, who is generally second favourite with the bookies and around the 4/1 mark.
80% Of The Last 20 May Hill Stakes Winners Had Two Or More Runs
The final big May Hill Stakes trend to note is that having had a tad more experience is key – 16 of the last 20 winners had raced at least twice. Yes, most will have this trend in their corner, but the once-raced Crystallium, who won on debut at Chelmsford, will have this to overcome.

May Hill Stakes Each-Way Tip: Novakai The Value
Away from the hot-favourite, for the value hunters out there, the Karl Burke runner NOVAKAI (e/w) @ 9/1 with BetUK is the most interesting. This juvenile was a fair 5th (of 9) in the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket last month (watch below) and with 50% of the last 20 winners of the May Hill having raced at HQ last time out, this is a decent trend in his favour.
The Burke yard also won this race in 2017 with Laurens, so know what’s needed and she’s also got course winning form after bolting up on debut on Town Moor back in the middle of July.
