Czech Republic international Jakub Jankto has come out as gay on social media this afternoon.

Jakub Jankto, who currently plays for Sparta Prague in his native Czech Republic on loan from Getafe, has taken to social media to announce the news that he is gay.

The 27-year-old posted a video on his Twitter account, coming out to the public, similarly to the way Australian footballer Josh Cavallo came out as gay back in 2021.

“Hi, I’m Jakub Jankto. Like everybody else, I have my strengths, I have my weaknesses, I have a family, I have my friends.” he said.

“I have a job, which I have been doing it as best as I can, for years, with seriousness, professionalism and passion. Like everybody else, I also want to live my life in freedom without fears, without prejudice, without violence, but with love.

“I am homosexual, and I no longer want to hide myself.”

His current club Sparta Prague provided a statement, strongly supporting their midfielder.

“Jakub spoke openly about his sexual orientation with the club some time ago,” they said. “Everything else concerns his personal life. No further comments. No more questions. You have our support. Live your life, Jacob. Nothing else matters.”

Statements of support for Jankto are to be seen all over social media. Hundreds of organisations within football have responded positively to the news.

Jankto is a regular in the Czech Republic midfield, having made his debut for the national side back in 2017.

He’s enjoyed spells in Italy and Spain, and was reportedly signed by Sampdoria for €15m back in 2019.

Since then, he has signed for La Liga side Getafe, and is now back at his boyhood club Sparta Prague on loan for the 2022/23 season.
