Pundit Chris Sutton has slammed Manchester United’s No. 1 Onana following a catalogue of high-profile errors and suggests he is a downgrade on David de Gea.

Onana’s Costly Mistakes for Manchester United

Upon signing for the club for £47m in June, the Cameroonian arrived with a reputation for composure on the ball and the ability to play out from the back.

Speaking after United’s preseason defeat to Dortmund in the US, Onana said: “They play a lot of balls back to me, so I have to give them confidence and I want my players to give them to me to give me confidence.”

Since then, however, the former Inter Milan shot-stopper has not lived up to expectations, shipping an average of two goals per game since his arrival.

In his first Premier League game against Wolves, he was fortunate to avoid giving away a penalty after clattering into striker, Sasa Kalajdzic, an incident that caused mass outrage across the football world.

Since then the Cameroonian’s luck has run out. The first costly error came in the Red Devils opening Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, which Onana says was the worst game of his life after the former Ajax man allowed a tame Leroy Sane effort to squirm underneath his body.

Then in midweek, in United’s second Champions League group game against Galatasaray, Onana’s under-hit pass fell short of Casemiro causing the Brazilian midfielder to give away a penalty and head for an early bath.

Within four minutes, the 27-year-old was at it again as Mauro Icardi broke clear of United’s defence and chipped Onana from the edge of the box, after the Cameroonian committed himself too early.

What Has Chris Sutton Said About Onana?

Speaking on Mail Sport’s It’s All Coming Up, Sutton said: “I think he’s a downgrade on De Gea. I really do.

“I’ve seen enough of him. Is he better than De Gea with his feet? Probably, only just.

“But I’m more interested in him keeping the ball out the back of the net and I think he’s made a lot of blunders this season. A lot of goalkeeping errors.

“You go to the game against Bayern Munich, a couple of errors, and even the game this week (against Galatasaray) where I thought the third goal, he went down so early.

“I’m not so sure about him. I think Manchester United will make a change. I’m not saying this season but I think at the end of the season they need to get an upgrade on Onana.”

In light of the 27-year-old’s poor form and Manchester United’s underwhelming start to the season, Erik ten Hag could be forced into an early decision on his new No.1.

The Red Devils face a tough test against Brentford at Old Trafford this weekend and will be hoping Onana can regain some modicum form.
