Former Brighton manager Chris Hughton is in the mix to become the next Republic of Ireland manager according to the latest odds.

Current boss Stephen Kenny is in hot water following Friday’s 2-1 loss against Greece, with Ireland failing to put a point on the board in their opening Euro 2024 qualifying fixtures.

Kenny’s contract expires at the end of the campaign and bookmakers have already priced up the potential successors, with Hughton leading the betting according to BoyleSports.

The 64-year-old, born in England, represented Ireland at international level during his playing career and made 53 appearances for the Emerald Isle between 1979 and 1991 – scoring once.

He is the current head coach of the Ghana national team – appointed in February – but could find the switch to Dublin a more attractive role.

Ireland have been handed another setback in their hopes of qualifying for a major tournament and the future looks bleak for Kenny, who could very well lose his job without a win against Gibraltar on Monday.

After an encouraging Euro 2016 campaign where they reached the knockout stage, Ireland narrowly missed out on qualification for the World Cup in 2018.

The nation has showed little progress since and has only travelled backwards, leading many to propose a change at the helm.
