2023 Cheltenham Festival Bankers or Blowouts on Day Three: Thurs 16th March
There will be more Cheltenham Festival bankers on day three – Thursday 16th March, as punters look for the fancied horses to put in their accas. However, which of the Cheltenham day three horses have the best chance of winning and which runners can be taken on?
1.30: Turners Novices’ Chase ITV1 – MIGHTY POTTER @ 5/4
Fair hurdler but has turned into a ‘mighty’ chaser. Since the switch to fences, this Gordon Elliott Cheltenham runner is 3-from-3. The most recent of those wins came in the Ladbrokes Novice Chase at the DRF – winning by 8 1/2 lengths. He’ll be a popular pick to get day three favourite backers off and running, but there is a slight worry. His only past run at the Festival was when pulled up in the Supreme last year. Yes, that was over hurdles but it will still be something to cling to if taking him on. Add in Banbridge and some fair other sorts being fair challengers, then he might be worth taking on. VERDICT: BLOWOUT
2.50: Ryanair Chase ITV1 – SHISHKIN @ 4/6
After a few poor races, Shiskin returned to winning ways last time out when winning the Ascot Chase. This Nicky Henderson horse flopped in the Champion Chase at the meeting last year, but connections have taken their time since and opted for a step up in trip. That’s paid off as he bolted up last time at Ascot over 2m5f and even though there was some ‘Gold Cup Talk’ the Ryanair Chase looked the obvious call. He’s won 8 of his 10 chase starts and in a race that lacks depth this year – he looks the clear one to beat. VERDICT: BANKER

3.30: Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle ITV1 – BLAZING KHAL @ 5/2
Wasn’t a certain runner in the race after some training setbacks. But Blazing Khal has been confirmed to run now by connections and is sure to be a popular pick. From the shrewd Charles Byrnes yard and comes here 4-from-4 over hurdles. Last seen winning a Grade 2 at Navan in great fashion and is also a 2-time winner at Cheltenham. Therefore, we know the track suits and it will be a shock if he’s not playing a leading role. But, the niggle is the slight training setback he’s had in the build-up. Not ideal preparation an of the main championship races this year, this one looks the most competitive. VERDICT: BLOWOUT
4.50: Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle RTV – LUCCIA @ 13/8
Nicky Henderson classy mare that is yet to lose a race, she’s won all four starts – two over hurdles and two in bumpers. Her last success was an easy 11 length win at Exeter and since then has been the big favourite for the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle on the day three. This will, however, be her toughest task yet and will be taking over some promising Irish mares too. Willie Mullins has also won 5 of the 7 runnings of this race and will be firing a few bullets at the race again. Overall, Luccia is probably a worthy favourite as she’s done nothing wrong. But it’s hard to know what she’s beaten so far. VERDICT: BLOWOUT
