With just 10 days to go until Chelsea kick off their Premier League campaign, they may have been dealt a hammer blow as Christopher Nkunku was forced off with a knee injury in their final pre-season match versus Borussia Dortmund in the early hours of Thursday morning.

After a highly impressive pre-season, Christopher Nkunku was forced off with a knee injury in Chelsea‘s final match on their tour of the United States.

It took just 22 minutes for the forward to go down clutching his knee against Borussia Dortmund on Thursday morning, much to the dismay of fans of the London-club.

The Frenchman has been pulling the strings for Mauricio Pochettino’s side ahead of the new campaign, and looks to have formed an exciting partnership with fellow summer arrival Nicolas Jackson.

Nkunku started four of Chelsea’s five pre-season matches and scored three times, with goals coming against Wrexham, Brighton and Fulham.

However we may not get the chance to see his partnership with Jackson in action for the Blues in their league opener versus Liverpool in 10 days, with the extent of his injury currently unknown.

In his post-match press conference, Pochettino confirmed Nkunku’s injury, and revealed that he is currently being checked over by doctors.

“The doctors are checking him, and I hope it is not a big issue.” he said.

“He feels something in his knee, but we hope it is nothing big. We hope he can be back quickly with the team. We need a few days to assess him.”

This may well be the second major injury blow for a Premier League side ahead of the new campaign, after Mikel Arteta confirmed yesterday that Arsenal will be without Gabriel Jesus to kick-off the season after he underwent a procedure on his knee.
