Chelsea have been the main talking point this January transfer window. After their month of spending they now face another issue ahead of the Champions League knockout stages.

Chelsea have spent a cool £600m on 18 players since Todd Boehly took over the club. Their spending this month alone smashed the record for the most spent by a club in a single window.

This month they’ve brought in:

  • Joao Felix, CF (Atlético Madrid) – Loan
  • David Datro Fofana, CF (Molde) – £10.6m
  • Andrey Santos, CM (Vasco da Gama) – £11m
  • Malo Gusto, RB (Lyon) – £26.5m
  • Noni Madueke, RW (PSV) – £31m
  • Benoit Badiashile, CB (Monaco) – £33.5m
  • Mykhaylo Mudryk, LW (Shakhtar) – £61m
  • Enzo Fernandes, CM (Benfica) – £107m

Chelsea’s Champions League Dilemma

With all their new signings, Chelsea will be hoping to claim a trophy this season. Unfortunately, Graham Potter will only be able to register three new players to his Champions League squad.

The Blues will face Borussia Dortmund in their opening knockout game. It’s a game that will test Potter and his team, but they’ll be confident they’ve got enough to get through the tie.

Article 46.01 of the Champions League regulations states: ‘As of the round of 16, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition.’

Chelsea only registered 24 out of a possible 25 players for the group stage, leaving one space spare. This means Potter has some room for movement, but it’s going to be a tough task for the Chelsea manager.
