Championship Accumulator Tip 1: Middlesbrough to Win

We skip Friday night’s opener to head straight to Riverside, where one of last year’s four play-off teams host a Millwall side who were knocking on door for a spot.

The race for play-off places was perhaps the most competitive we have seen in recent seasons, with just nine points separating fourth and tenth by the end of play.

Middlesbrough would of course fail to make it to the play-off final after a single Gustavo Hamer goal for Coventry across two legs, was enough to see them through.

Boro were one of the most impressive sides in the division despite their disappointing end, and finished with the second-highest goal tally, just three shy of Burnley’s title-winning haul.

They also had the third-best home form, while Millwall’s stuttering results away from the Den saw them register double figure losses. The repeat of this meeting saw Millwall fall to defeat in January, and we are tipping a similar result here.

Championship Accumulator Tip 2: Watford to Win and BTTS

This exact fixture led to one of the most entertaining affairs in the Championship last season, with QPR’s Albert Adomah cancelling out a Joao Pedro-led comeback to prevail with a 3-2 victory.

The Hoops would also go on to compete the double over Watford, but we are not expecting that to be the case in this season opener.

It is not hard to be pessimistic about QPR’s chances of a relegation-threatened season once more, whereas there is a quiet optimism amongst the Hornets faithful with Valerien Ismael the latest to take over in the hot seat.

Seny Dieng had clean sheet percentage of just 19 for QPR in 2022/23, but Watford were also not immune from conceding sloppy goals – we can see this going to the hosts but with both getting on the scoresheet.

Championship Accumulator Tip 3: Sunderland vs Ipswich – Draw

This fixture is certainly one to keep an eye on for the opening round.

The past five meetings between these two is pretty grim reading for Ipswich, who have fallen to defeat in four of them. With Sunderland gaining promotion to the Championship the season before last, their most recent meeting came in December 2021 where they played out a 1-1 draw – this happens to be our prediction for Sunday afternoon.

Ipswich will of course be raring to go after an emphatic 101-goal League One campaign, but Sunderland themselves enjoyed a spectacular return to the Championship, losing to eventual play-off champions Luton.

Expect end-to-end entertainment in this one between two teams who hold real attacking impetus.
