Brighton have reached an agreement with Ajax to sign Ghanaian midfielder Mohamed Kudus for £34.5m which would mark a club-record fee for the highly-rated youngster.

If the deal is completed, the Seagulls would break their transfer record for the second time this summer following the £30 arrival of Joao Pedro from Watford in July.

According to David Ornstein, Brighton have agreed a deal in principle to bring Kudus to the south coast for £34.5m subject to personal terms with the player – who has reportedly been on the radar of top six clubs Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Brighton are trying their best to hold onto Moses Caicedo amid strong interest from Chelsea, so this could be seen as a replacement signing with the Seagulls all-but conceding to losing their Ecuadorian star this summer.

The 23-year-old rose to stardom during the World Cup last year, including a highlight performance with a brace against South Korea in a 3-2 win. He joined Ajax for €9m in July 2020 from Danish outfit Nordsjælland.

Kudus scored 11 goals and added four assists in the Eredivisie as Ajax finished third behind Feyenoord and PSV in the table. He made six appearances in the Champions League, scoring four times and providing two assists.

Ajax dropped into the Europa League where they were subsequently sent home by Bundesliga side FC Union Berlin, but Kudus shone once again by scoring their only goal across the two legs.

The Ghana international offers a new dynamic to Roberto De Zerbi’s attacking style of play and he can play in a number of positions including attacking midfield, on the wing or as a centre-forward.

This is undoubtedly a statement signing from Brighton if they can get a deal over the line as they prepare to play European football for the first time in the club’s history in the Europa League later this year.

Following a strong sixth-placed finish in the Premier League last season, the south coast side have no plans of regressing and look set to possibly make a charge at the Champions League spots this time around.
