Brighton started their European tour with a home tie against AEK Athens. It was the clubs first European tie in its 122-years history, and the fans in the stadium got the atmosphere going.

Brighton drew level 19 minutes later after the referee, who had an awful night, was sent to the screen after missing a foul. Joao Pedro stepped up and scored the equaliser. However, AEK Athens were ahead just 10 minutes later.

With the second half passing by, Brighton searched for an equaliser. The referee was again sent to the screen after being advised by VAR. Another penalty was awarded and Pedro slotted home his second of the game.

Despite chances, Brighton failed to take the lead and in the 84th minute, AEK were ahead again. This time it was Ezequiel Ponce who scored what turned out to be the winner.
