Bournemouth have appointed former Rayo Vallecano manager, Andoni Iraola, on a two-year deal just hours after Gary O’Neil was dismissed by The Cherries.

In news that has stunned supporters across the Premier League, Bournemouth have parted ways with Gary O’Neil despite the Englishman keeping the Cherries in the top-flight.

Many expected the side from the south of England to face the drop in their return to the Premier League, however, a run of results saw the club remain in the prestigious division.

However, O’Neil’s side went without a win in their last five matches and owner, Bill Foley, is said to have lofty expectations for the upcoming season.

Following the sacking of the 40-year-old coach, many wondered who would be next in line to take the reigns at the Vitality Stadium. However, within the last hour the club have confirmed that former Rayo Vallecano manager, Andoni Iraola, will be at the helm for the 2023-24 campaign.

The Spaniard took his first step into management in June 2018, where he played a huge part in AEK Larnaca’s fourth place finish and left the club in January 2019.

He then managed is first full season, as in July 2019 he was appointed by CD Mirandes in the Spanish second division – where the club finished 11th.

Parting ways with the Spanish club in July 2020, Iraola earned a role at Rayo Vallecano – finishing sixth in his opening season and brought La Liga football back to Vallecano.

In his last two seasons at the club, the 40-year-old guided his side to a 12th place finish and established himself as a capable coach amongst Spain’s highest competition.

The Spaniard will begin his work in the South of England on July 1st and the Cherries will be hoping to build on the superb work that O’Neil managed during the 2022-23 campaign.
